Santa Monica Pier

Overview

The Santa Monica Pier is a historic oceanfront landmark featuring an amusement park, aquarium, family-friendly attractions, shops, and dining. The Pier is wheelchair accessible throughout, with paved pathways connecting all areas. Accessible parking is available in nearby lots, and accessible restrooms are located at several points along the Pier. The Pacific Park amusement area offers accessible boarding for most rides, and wheelchairs are available to borrow at no charge from the Pier Office.

The Santa Monica Pier Aquarium, located below the carousel, features wheelchair-accessible exhibits and touch tanks at accessible heights. Service animals are welcome throughout the Pier. Designated accessible parking spaces are available in the nearby Beach Lot 1 North and other city parking facilities, with an accessible drop-off area near the Pier entrance. Seating areas and benches are positioned throughout the Pier for rest stops.

Visitors report that while the main Pier deck is flat and fully accessible, crowding during peak times can make navigation challenging for wheelchair users and those with mobility aids. Some visitors note that the older wooden decking can create vibration and noise that may be overwhelming for individuals with sensory sensitivities. The accessibility of individual rides at Pacific Park varies, and visitors recommend checking with ride operators about specific accommodation needs.

Crowded and Bumpy

The pier is down a steep ramp. Once on the pier, the wood beams are bumpy, and it can be very crowded on the weekends. The pier is full of restaurants with varying accessibility and a few rides (Merry-Go-Round, Roller Coaster, Carousel).
