Venice Beach

Venice Beach is one of Los Angeles’s most iconic coastal destinations, stretching along the Pacific Ocean in Venice, CA. The beach is managed by the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks and LA County Beaches and Harbors. Accessibility features include accessible parking lots along the beachfront, designated accessible drop-off areas, and a paved oceanfront boardwalk (Ocean Front Walk) that runs parallel to the beach, providing a smooth, level route for wheelchair users and those with mobility aids. Accessible restrooms and beach wheelchair loaner programs are available through the LA County Beaches and Harbors department at select locations along the beach.

LA County provides beach wheelchairs (beach-appropriate mobility aids with wide tires) at no charge at lifeguard headquarters locations on a first-come, first-served basis. The paved boardwalk offers a largely flat, accessible route for strolling along the beach, though access from the boardwalk onto the sand itself is unpaved and may be challenging for standard wheelchairs. Service animals are welcome throughout the beach area. Signage along the boardwalk is large and easy to read.

Visitors report that Venice Beach can become extremely crowded on weekends and holidays, particularly in summer, making navigation more challenging for wheelchair users. Early morning visits on weekdays are noted as the least crowded times. The transition from the paved boardwalk to the sandy beach is a significant barrier for standard wheelchairs, making the loaner beach wheelchair program particularly valuable. Parking lots fill quickly on busy days, so visitors with accessible parking placards are advised to arrive early.
