Painted Ladies (Alamo Square)

Overview

Alamo Square Park is a 13.6-acre public park in San Francisco’s Western Addition neighborhood, home to the iconic Painted Ladies — a row of colorful Victorian houses on Steiner Street famously known as Postcard Row. Managed by the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department, the park is free and open daily to all visitors. The accessible entrance to the park is at the Southeast corner, at Hayes and Scott Streets. Paved walkways at the main entrances on Hayes and Steiner Streets accommodate wheelchairs and strollers, and the park features an ADA-accessible restroom constructed as part of a major renovation. Benches are available throughout the park for resting, and the park includes picnic tables, a playground, tennis court, dog play area, and water fountains.

Admission to Alamo Square Park is free for everyone. The park is a fully open public green space with no ticketing or entry fees. Service animals are welcome. Visitors can access the park via several Muni bus lines that stop nearby, including routes 5, 21, 22, and 24. Street parking is available on surrounding streets, though it can be limited during busy periods. Mornings tend to be quieter and less crowded, making them a good time to visit for those who prefer a calmer experience.

Visitors note that the park sits on a steep hill, and while the accessible entrance and paved paths offer a level route into the park, some areas of the grass and slopes may be challenging for those with limited mobility. The east side near the Painted Ladies view tends to be the busiest, while the western side of the park is generally quieter. Public restrooms are available on-site near the playground.
