California Academy of Sciences

Overview

The California Academy of Sciences is a world-class natural history museum and research institution in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park, housing an aquarium, planetarium, rainforest, and natural history museum under one living roof. The Academy is fully wheelchair accessible, with ADA-compliant ramps and alternate entrances to all exhibits including the rainforest and Morrison Planetarium. Accessible parking is available on the B1 level of the underground Music Concourse Garage, and guests may enter at street level or via elevator from the garage. Manual wheelchairs are available to borrow free of charge in the lobby on a first-come, first-served basis. Accessible restrooms are located on every floor, and reserved seating for visitors with disabilities is available in both the planetarium and Forum Theater.

For guests who are deaf or hearing-impaired, assistive listening devices are positioned in the planetarium, and sign-language interpretation for shows, exhibit tours, and museum visits of up to one hour is available with two weeks’ advance notice. All exhibits feature built-in detection points and tactile components for guests who are blind or partially sighted, and all elevators include auditory signals. The Academy offers sensory kits for checkout in the lobby — including adjustable earmuffs, sunglasses, and tactile/fidget toys — and an interactive Sensory Guide map that rates museum areas by noise, visual, touch, and smell levels. Staff recommend visiting 1–2 hours before closing for a quieter experience, and Exhibit Guides are available to help prepare visitors with sensory sensitivities before their visit. Any interpreter accompanying a visitor with a disability is admitted free of charge.

Visitors report that the Academy can get very busy, particularly on weekday mornings when school groups are present, and recommend arriving in the afternoon or during off-peak seasons for a more comfortable experience. Some visitors note that transitions between exhibits — especially between the rainforest, aquarium, and main floor — involve notable changes in noise, temperature, and lighting, and suggest planning breaks accordingly. The sensory kits are well regarded by families, though visitors note they are available on a first-come, first-served basis, so arriving early or asking at the lobby promptly is advised. The in-and-out hand stamp policy is appreciated by those who need to step outside for breaks into Golden Gate Park.
