Exploratorium

Overview

The Exploratorium is a world-renowned hands-on science museum located on San Francisco’s waterfront at Pier 15. The museum is fully navigable by wheelchair and mobility devices, with automatic door openers at all public entries and exits, elevator access to the Fisher Bay Observatory Gallery, a wheelchair lift in the Kanbar Forum, and benches and rest areas throughout the building. Loaner wheelchairs are available free of charge at the Information Desk (ID required as deposit). Disabled person parking placards qualify for free street parking nearby, and a white-curbed loading zone on the Embarcadero provides a convenient drop-off point. Visitors with disabilities can purchase tickets at a reduced rate, and ADA aides receive complimentary admission. Service animals and leashed pets under owner control are welcome.

The Exploratorium offers a robust range of sensory and communication accommodations. Sensory kits โ€” including fidget toys, a plush toy, sunglasses, ear protectors, a communication board, and weighted lap pads โ€” are available for loan at the Information Desk. A downloadable Sensory Map helps visitors identify quieter gallery areas such as the Atrium, Moore Gallery 4, and the outdoor terrace. Quieter times are generally after 3:00 p.m. and on fall weekends. ASL interpretation is available with at least one week’s advance notice (call 415.528.4407 or email [email protected]), and interpreters are admitted free of charge for the Tactile Dome. Tactile maps for blind or low vision visitors are available at the Information Desk. An assistive listening system is available in the Kanbar Forum. Changing tables are available in all restrooms, and private breastfeeding space can be arranged through the Information Desk.

Visitors report that the Exploratorium can get very busy, especially on weekends and school holidays, making sensory-sensitive visits easier during weekday afternoons or fall weekends as the museum suggests. Some visitors note that the open-plan, hands-on nature of the exhibits means sound levels can be high in popular gallery areas, so the loaner ear protectors are considered particularly useful. The outdoor spaces and bay terrace are frequently mentioned as welcome relief from crowded interior areas. Visitors who have used the loaner wheelchairs generally find the process straightforward, though the limited quantity means arriving early is advisable.
