Battleship USS Iowa Museum

Overview

The Battleship USS Iowa Museum is a maritime museum and the only battleship open to the public on the West Coast, permanently docked at Berth 87 in San Pedro at the Port of Los Angeles. Operated by the Pacific Battleship Center, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, the museum offers self-guided and crew-led tours across multiple decks of the historic WWII-era USS Iowa. Accessible parking is available near the entry ramp in the adjacent LA World Cruise Terminal lot. The museum has installed chairlifts to improve access for guests with mobility limitations: one lift on the Main Deck brings guests to the 01 level and the Captain’s Cabin, and two additional lifts provide access to the 2nd deck museum spaces and 3rd deck exhibit area as part of the LOST AT SEA exhibit opening. The President’s Tour and Introductory Guided Tour are noted as adaptable for guests with accessibility needs. Crew and volunteers are trained to assist guests with limited mobility and to operate the lifts. Restrooms are available on-site.

Accessibility on this historic warship is inherently limited by its original military design. Narrow doorways, raised watertight door frames (known as “knee knockers”), steep ladder-style stairways, and uneven decking throughout the ship are not wheelchair-friendly. Wheelchair and walker users are primarily restricted to Main Deck exterior spaces, with chairlift access to select interior areas. Gangway incline also varies with tidal conditions, with lower tides offering easier boarding for those using assistive devices. Crew-led specialty tours such as the Engineering and Big Guns tours are not accessible to wheelchair users or walkers. For areas inaccessible due to ladders or tight passages, the museum offers a virtual tour experience and detailed exhibits on accessible decks. Self-guided tour routes include interpretive signage and digital displays throughout the ship. A free mobile app with audio content, crew stories, and interactive features is available and included with admission.

Visitors report that staff and volunteers are genuinely helpful and accommodating for guests with limited mobility, and recommend calling ahead to discuss specific needs. Some visitors note that the gangway ramp can be steep at high tide and advise planning the visit around lower tide conditions for easier boarding. The main deck is generally navigable for wheelchairs, but many note that access beyond the main deck and select lift-served areas remains challenging due to the ship’s historic configuration.
