Congregation Emanu-El is one of California’s oldest Reform Jewish synagogues, housed in a landmark 1926 Byzantine Revival building in San Francisco’s Richmond District. A completed $97 million renovation brought major accessibility improvements to the historic structure: the grand Lake Street entrance — closed since 1990 due to accessibility barriers — was reopened with a new street-level glazed lobby, eliminating the staircase that had previously impeded entry for mobility-challenged visitors. All three sanctuaries are wheelchair accessible, including the Bimah in the main sanctuary, and wheelchair-accessible restrooms and an elevator serving all floors are available. A designated accessible parking space and a white drop-off zone in front of the building are provided for congregants and visitors with disabilities. The congregation is listed as wheelchair-accessible by the Union for Reform Judaism.
For hearing accessibility, the synagogue has installed RF-based assistive listening devices — compatible with or without telecoil-enabled hearing aids — in both the main sanctuary and the Martin Meyer Auditorium. Large-print prayer books (siddurs) are also available at all services. The congregation has a strong, longstanding commitment to inclusion for people with disabilities, including trained staff, learning specialists, and Caring Companions (shadow teachers) for students who need additional support. Services are also streamed live via the internet for those who cannot attend in person.
Visitors report that the newly renovated building feels much more open and welcoming than before, with the restored main entrance creating a more dignified and accessible arrival experience. The congregation is widely noted for its inclusive culture and willingness to make individualized accommodations for congregants with disabilities.
