Overview

Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is the primary international airport serving the greater Los Angeles area, operated by Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA). It features nine passenger terminals and a comprehensive range of physical accessibility features for travelers with disabilities. All terminals have elevators between levels, ramps at entrances, and accessible restrooms with extra-wide stalls and grab bars. Every terminal also has tactile paving and Braille signage for visually impaired travelers, and hearing loop systems are installed at information desks and gates. Accessible parking spaces are provided in all LAX parking lots and structures, positioned close to elevators where applicable. The LAX-it shuttle service is ADA-accessible, operating free of charge for senior and disabled travelers, with low-floor ramps or wheelchair lifts on every shuttle. All FlyAway bus services are also equipped with wheelchair lifts. Companion care restrooms are available in Terminals 2, 4, 5, and 7 and in the Tom Bradley International Terminal. The LAX-it facility features adult changing tables and ADA-friendly restroom stalls with flat-floor access. Service animal relief areas are located both pre- and post-security.

LAX subscribes to AIRA, a service connecting blind and low-vision individuals to visual information at the airport via designated access areas. Wheelchair assistance is provided free of charge by airlines and should be requested 48–72 hours in advance; airlines are required to provide curbside wheelchair assistance upon request. LAX also offers a Voluntary Self-Identification Program for families traveling with autistic members, who can notify staff at the ticket counter to receive stickers indicating they may need additional assistance. TSA Cares can be arranged for travelers with autism with a minimum of three days’ notice. Braille signage is present throughout all terminals alongside TTY devices for hearing-impaired travelers.

Visitors report that LAX staff are generally very helpful to passengers with mobility needs, assisting with aircraft transfers, baggage claim, and customs navigation. Some visitors note that the distances between terminals can be significant, and recommend allowing extra time when navigating between gates, especially at the Tom Bradley International Terminal.

Access Limitations & Conditions

Wheelchair service must be requested from your airline 48–72 hours in advance; airlines are not responsible for providing wheelchair service from parking structures to terminals. Companion care restrooms are available only in Terminals 2, 4, 5, 7, and the Tom Bradley International Terminal — not all terminals. Adult changing tables are confirmed at the LAX-it facility only. Not all airport-area hotels provide accessible van service. TSA Cares autism screening support requires a minimum of three days’ advance notice.
