Rancho Los Alamitos Historic Ranch and Gardens

Overview

Rancho Los Alamitos Historic Ranch and Gardens is a 7½-acre historic landmark in Long Beach, California, twice listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The site encompasses four acres of historic gardens, an adobe ranch house dating to c. 1800, a restored early 20th-century barnyard with farm animals, and the Rancho Center with a permanent exhibition and theatre. Admission and parking are free to all visitors. All museum entrances and floors are accessible to visitors using wheeled devices or those with mobility difficulties. Accessible parking spaces are available in the parking lot near the Rancho Center entrance. Every restroom at the Rancho is wheelchair accessible. Manual wheelchairs are available to check out free of charge — note that the maximum clearance to enter the historic Ranch House is 32 inches, and suitably sized wheelchairs are provided for this purpose. Most gardens are navigable by wheelchair; however, the historic Cutting Garden, Cypress Patio, Oleander Walk, and Rose Garden are accessible only by stairs and can be viewed from the driveway and Geranium Walk.

Rancho Los Alamitos welcomes service animals in all public areas. Emotional Support Animals are not permitted inside the historic site. The Rancho’s staff and docents are known for their commitment to inclusive programming, and the site has hosted specially designed sensory-rich tours for visitors with visual impairments, featuring tactile plant and garden experiences guided by knowledgeable docents.

Visitors report that the overall grounds are peaceful and relatively uncrowded, making it a relaxed outing for those with sensory sensitivities. Some visitors note that certain garden sections remain inaccessible by wheelchair due to stairs, and that the guided tour is recommended for the fullest experience of the historic ranch house. The entrance through a residential security gate can require advance planning for those using paratransit or drop-off services. The small scale of the site is generally seen as a plus for those who find larger venues tiring.
