The Museum of Jurassic Technology is an enigmatic, dimly lit museum in Culver City that blends fact and fiction across a series of immersive exhibits. It occupies a building more than a century old, and accessibility is shaped by that architecture: the museum spans two floors connected only by stairs, with no elevator.
Most exhibitions are on the lower floor, which is largely wheelchair accessible, though a few spaces are not. A Veiled Gazelle has stairs and cannot be reached by wheelchair, and the entrance to the Floral Radiographs of Albert G. Richards exhibit has a slight lip that some mobility aid users may find difficult. Some passages are narrow, the tightest measuring 26 inches across, which may be hard for larger wheelchairs. The upstairs exhibits are reached by 20 stairs and the courtyard by a further five steps; visitors who cannot manage the upper floor can ask the front desk to have tea from the upstairs Tea Room served downstairs instead.
Seating is available throughout the museum, though some seats require a small step up. Restrooms are single-stall, one per floor, and none is ADA accessible; the nearest accessible restroom is next door at Emerald Thai. The museum does not offer loaner wheelchairs or other mobility aids.
Many galleries are intentionally dark. Pen lights can be reserved at the front desk to help navigate the space. Several exhibits play audio through handheld devices, and transcripts of select exhibitions are available in English at the front desk.
The setting is sensory-rich: spaces are dark and narrow, some with internally lit 3D monitors, and low ambient sound runs throughout, including intermittent thunder in Tell the Bees, a sustained high-pitched tone in A Veiled Gazelle, and a fox call near the entrance. Visitors are welcome to bring their own earplugs or headphones, and live birds in the courtyard may move suddenly. Those who prefer quieter conditions can plan around the museum’s less busy times, typically Thursday and Friday after 4 p.m.
Service dogs, as defined by the ADA, are welcome in all public areas; emotional support, comfort, and therapy animals are not permitted. The museum asks that visitors bringing a service animal make contact 24 hours in advance and check in at the front desk on arrival. Resident dogs and birds live throughout the museum, so visitors with animal allergies should plan accordingly. Discounted admission is available for visitors with disabilities.
