Ballona Creek Discovery Park is a free, open-air museum on the edge of the Ballona Wetlands in Playa Vista, built around the natural and cultural history of one of Los Angeles County’s last coastal wetlands. Its interior pathways are ADA-compliant and paved, with well-marked accessible parking. The center of the park features a large tactile representation of the wetlands, and a replica Tongva kiiy includes audio recordings of Tongva Gabrielino stories. A self-guided tour runs through interpretive and tactile exhibits throughout the park. Accessible picnic tables with firm, stable surfaces and 27″-plus knee clearance sit near the main entrance.
The adjacent Bluff Creek Trail and Riparian Trail at the Sports Park are natural-surface trails, composed largely of decomposed granite, and some sections may be difficult for wheelchair users. The main trailhead entrance to Discovery Park is not fully accessible, but an alternate accessible entrance is available about 400 feet further along Bluff Creek Drive. During heavy rains, some trail sections can become muddy or washed out. Service animals are welcome throughout.
Visitors report that early morning is the best time for birdwatching and for smaller crowds.
