Overview

The Ballona Wetlands Ecological Reserve is a state-owned coastal wetland managed by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, one of the last remaining coastal wetlands in Los Angeles County. It is a working conservation site rather than a developed park: public access is limited to set hours, and its surfaces are unpaved.

The Fiji Trail, in the reserve’s Area A, is the only reserve trail open on a regular public schedule. It runs on compressed dirt and gravel, with some looser gravel, and doubles as a SoCalGas access road for monitoring wells. Area A is open Wednesday through Saturday, 8 AM to 1 PM, except state holidays. Parking is available in a lot just inside the gate; the lot is the same compressed dirt and gravel and is not marked accessible parking.

The reserve’s saltwater marsh is closed to the public, and Friends of Ballona Wetlands runs guided tours of the wider wetlands.
