Bernal Heights Park is a 26-acre hilltop open space managed by the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department, offering sweeping 360-degree panoramic views of the city, bay, and surrounding mountains. The park is free to enter and open daily from 5 a.m. to midnight. A paved, limited-access road (Bernal Heights Boulevard) circles the hilltop and provides the primary route to the summit, while a network of dirt trails winds around the hill’s flanks. A small parking lot on Folsom Street includes a dedicated accessible/handicapped parking space. The Bernal Heights Playground (500 Moultrie Street), adjacent to the park, completed a full renewal in November 2025 that included ADA compliance upgrades, new play equipment, accessible sandbox entry points, and a shade structure.
The park’s terrain is predominantly natural and hilly. The paved boulevard near the park entrance offers the most accessible route, but trail surfaces transition to rocky dirt as elevation increases, and some staircases are present on steeper sections. No public restrooms are located within the hilltop park itself; restrooms are available at the nearby Bernal Heights Recreation Center. The park is fully dog-friendly, with off-leash areas permitted in designated zones. Service animals are welcome throughout all San Francisco Recreation and Parks facilities.
Visitors report that only the lower, paved portion of the main boulevard is manageable for wheelchair users or those with strollers, as the upper sections become steep and rocky with grades exceeding 8%. Some visitors note that street parking near the entrances can be limited on weekends and around sunset, and recommend arriving early for easier access. The park is generally described as quieter and less crowded than other San Francisco viewpoints like Twin Peaks.
