Castro Theatre

Overview

The Castro Theatre is a historic 1922 movie palace and live performance venue in San Francisco’s Castro District, reopened in February 2026 following a $41 million renovation. Following the renovation, the theatre is more accessible than ever: the floor rake has been slightly reduced and a lift installed so that wheelchair users are not relegated to the front rows, and the venue now features expanded ADA-compliant seating throughout the auditorium. Accessible seating is available for all shows and can be purchased via Ticketmaster using the accessible tickets filter; an ADA liaison is on hand at the entrance to escort patrons to accessible sections. A men’s room and a single-stall ADA restroom are located on the ground floor. The venue has 12 assisted listening devices, 4 individual closed captioning devices, and 4 individual audio description devices available from staff. Specifically, the theatre uses AURI-RX1 devices that amplify sound and DOLBY DAS-200 devices that provide amplified audio, display closed captions, and deliver narrative descriptions for the visually impaired. Service animals are welcome.

Accessible tickets can be requested directly through the venue or via Ticketmaster’s accessible ticket filter. Patrons with specific accessibility needs are encouraged to contact the venue in advance at [email protected]. The surrounding area is easy to navigate by wheelchair with no steep hills immediately adjacent to the theatre and navigable curb cuts. MUNI Metro and bus lines stop within walking distance and are the recommended way to reach the venue; street and lot metered parking is available nearby, though limited. Availability of specific accessibility features such as captioning and audio description depends on the movie or presentation format, so patrons are advised to confirm in advance.

Visitors report that arriving early — ideally near doors time — is important for securing accessible seating, as spots are first come, first served. Some visitors note that the post-renovation improvements have made the overall experience significantly more comfortable, with wider rows and cushioned seating. The cashless payment policy is worth noting for all patrons.
