San Francisco Playhouse is an award-winning nonprofit theatre company in Union Square, staging plays and musicals in an intimate 199-seat venue. Wheelchair and companion seating are available on the mezzanine level, accessible by elevator, while orchestra seating requires a short staircase. A loading zone in front of the theatre accommodates taxis and rideshares for convenient drop-off. Complimentary Assisted Listening Devices (ALDs) are available for all performances with an ID deposit, and mobility devices such as wheelchairs and scooters can be stored by House Management during the show. All restrooms are all-gender inclusive. Only licensed service dogs on leash are permitted; emotional support animals are not allowed.
For blind and visually impaired audience members, San Francisco Playhouse partners with Gravity Access Services to offer live audio description on selected performances. A professional audio describer provides a live wireless headset audio track describing visual elements of the production. Haptic access tours (20–30 minutes) are also offered before selected performances, allowing patrons to experience the space, performers, costumes, and key movement elements through touch. Live captioning is offered on selected performance dates, and the box office can be contacted in advance to request captioning on other dates. Accessibility accommodations including wheelchair seating, ALDs, and captioning can all be arranged by contacting the box office in advance. Discounts are available for seniors, students, and educators.
Visitors note that the intimate setting means sightlines are strong from nearly every seat, and the Union Square location is well-served by public transit with Powell Street BART/Muni just a few blocks away. Some visitors note that the mezzanine elevator access is the most practical route for wheelchair users, as all orchestra seats involve a short staircase.
