China Beach

Overview

China Beach is a small, sheltered cove within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, tucked between Lands End and Baker Beach in San Francisco’s Sea Cliff neighborhood. Admission and parking are both free. As part of an ongoing rehabilitation project, Phase 1 — completed in 2024 — delivered road and parking lot improvements along with a new accessible overlook with views of the water and Golden Gate Bridge. Designated accessible parking is available at the parking lot near the end of Sea Cliff Avenue. Access to the beach level is via a paved drive (as an alternative to the stairway), descending from the parking lot to the bathhouse building and then to the sand. Restrooms are available on site, open sunrise to sunset, with a full bathhouse rehabilitation and new permanent restroom facilities underway as part of Phase 2.

Service animals are permitted as a federally protected right within all NPS sites. The site tends to be less crowded than nearby Baker Beach, which may benefit visitors who prefer quieter beach environments. The NPS dedicated accessibility page for China Beach exists at nps.gov/goga/planyourvisit/china-beach-accessibility.htm, though full details were not available at time of research. The Golden Gate National Recreation Area actively encourages visitor feedback to improve accessibility across its facilities.

Visitors note that while the paved drive provides an alternative route to the beach, the road is steep and long, and may still present challenges for some wheelchair users or those with significant mobility impairments. The parking lot is small and fills quickly on weekends and sunny days, so arriving early is advised. The bathhouse facilities were in disrepair for several years, with renovation still ongoing as of 2026, so visitors should verify current restroom availability before visiting.
