Marshall's Beach

Overview

Marshall’s Beach is a secluded, hike-in beach within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area in the Presidio of San Francisco, offering some of the closest ground-level views of the Golden Gate Bridge. The beach is free to visit and open 24 hours daily. Access is exclusively on foot via the Batteries to Bluffs Trail — there are no roads or parking lots leading directly to the shore. The trail involves a steep descent with wooden stairs and uneven terrain, making the route very challenging for people with mobility impairments. The closest accessible parking spaces are at the Baker Beach north parking lot. There are no restrooms, amenities, or facilities of any kind at the beach itself; the nearest restrooms are at Baker Beach or the Fort Scott Ball Field. Service animals are permitted at this National Park Service site, as pets (other than service animals) are not allowed on the beach.

The terrain at Marshall’s Beach is rugged: landslides have scattered boulders and large rocks across the sand, and the northernmost section is only accessible at low tide. The beach can be completely submerged at high tide. The Batteries to Bluffs Trail combines wooden stairs and dirt paths; while the trail is generally well-maintained, it is rated moderate to strenuous and is not suitable for wheelchairs, strollers, or visitors with significant mobility limitations. No accessibility accommodations such as ramps, beach wheelchairs, or adapted facilities exist at the beach itself.

Visitors note that the hike down to the beach is manageable but the return climb is strenuous, and sturdy footwear is strongly recommended. The beach tends to be naturally uncrowded due to its difficult access, which some visitors with sensory sensitivities may find appealing. Parking at the nearby Langdon Court lot fills quickly on weekends and sunny days, so arriving early or using public transit (Muni bus 28 or 29) is advisable.
