Ocean Beach

Ocean Beach is a 3.5-mile stretch of Pacific coastline in San Francisco, administered by the National Park Service as part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Admission is free for all visitors. Wide, paved paths run the entire length of the beach, providing a continuous paved and level route along the Esplanade and a multi-use trail along the east side of the Great Highway from the Beach Chalet south to Sloat Boulevard. Accessible parking spaces are located at the northern end of the beach near stairwell ramps to the Esplanade (at stairwells 15, 21, and 27), in the Beach Chalet parking lot, and at the southern end in the Sloat Boulevard parking lot. Accessible restrooms are available at the Sloat Boulevard parking lot and on the ground floor of the Beach Chalet.

Beach wheelchairs are available upon request through the National Park Service’s Golden Gate National Recreation Area program. At least five days’ advance notice is recommended, though same-day requests are accommodated when possible. Wheelchair users can access the beach surface just south of Stairwell 28, where the sand meets the sidewalk at grade. Entry ramps to the Esplanade promenade are available at multiple stairwell locations along the northern stretch of the beach.

Visitors report that the seawall along the Esplanade blocks ocean views from a seated position, though partial views of the beach and water are visible through breaks in the wall. Some visitors note that blowing sand and overgrown vegetation can occasionally impede travel along certain promenade sections, particularly the Noriega Seawall stretch. The beach is typically less crowded than other San Francisco attractions, especially on weekdays, making it a more relaxed option for visitors who prefer quieter environments.
