Golden Gate Park

Overview

Golden Gate Park is a 1,017-acre urban park in San Francisco, managed by the SF Recreation and Park Department, and free to enter for all visitors. The park has made extensive accessibility investments across its grounds. Accessible parking is available throughout the park, including a dedicated all-accessible lot at the Bandshell (Music Concourse) with 20 blue zone spaces and 4 van-accessible spaces, as well as ADA spaces along Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, Nancy Pelosi Drive, and within the underground Music Concourse Garage. A published map of the park’s most usable pathways for people with mobility disabilities is available via SF Rec and Park. Paved, level pathways connect major attractions in the Music Concourse area, with ADA-compliant curb ramps throughout. Accessible restrooms are located near the Main Concourse and at multiple garden entrances. Paratransit vehicles (SF Access Program) are permitted on JFK Drive and throughout the park’s restricted-access routes, and the free Golden Gate Park Shuttle operates seven days a week connecting transit lines to park attractions.

The Conservatory of Flowers offers a drop-off ramp on its west side and loaner non-motorized wheelchairs available at the ticket booth on a first-come, first-served basis. San Francisco Botanical Garden features accessible pathways throughout its 55 acres and an ADA-accessible restroom at the Friend Gate. Service animals and support animals are permitted throughout the park and its gardens. The SF Recreation and Park Department states that all program locations can provide auxiliary aids and services including ASL interpretation. Caregivers accompanying visitors with disabilities receive complimentary admission at the Gardens of Golden Gate Park. Accessible pathways are marked on wayfinding signage with the ISA symbol. Some areas of the park, including parts of the Japanese Tea Garden, have uneven terrain, cobblestones, or steep grades that may present challenges for wheelchair users.

Visitors report that the Main Concourse area is paved and relatively flat, making it one of the most navigable sections of the park for wheelchair users. Some visitors note that weekend accessible parking fills quickly and recommend arriving early or using the free shuttle. Visitors using manual wheelchairs flag that certain garden paths have slight inclines requiring extra effort, while power wheelchair users generally find the main paved routes manageable.
