Coyote Point Recreation Area

Overview

Coyote Point Recreation Area is a 670-acre bayfront park operated by San Mateo County on the shore of San Francisco Bay, offering picnicking, swimming, a sandy beach, a marina, trails, the Magic Mountain Playground, and CuriOdyssey science museum and zoo. The park features ample accessible parking throughout, with spaces at the playground, trailheads, marina, promenade, and museum. Vehicles displaying a disabled person parking placard or license plate have their vehicle entry fee waived. Much of the park is flat, and a network of paved trails, bike paths, and roads allows visitors to navigate most of the park with relative ease. The 2022 Promenade reconstruction added accessible beach access points and an expanded parking area. The accessible playground at the Eucalyptus Recreation Area is also confirmed. Restrooms are located at multiple points around the park. Service animals are welcome throughout the park and within CuriOdyssey.

The park’s entry fee is $6 per vehicle, with waivers available for visitors displaying a disabled person placard or license plate, for veterans with proof of service, and for seniors age 62 and older on weekdays (non-holidays). The Coyote Point Yacht Club is noted as not wheelchair accessible. Visitor notes from accessibility-focused sources indicate that most of the park’s restrooms allow only front-approach transfers, are too shallow to fully close the stall door, and lack grab bars on the back wall — though at least one accessible restroom near the drop-in picnic area below CuriOdyssey offers more clearance. Gravel in some areas may present a challenge for manual wheelchair users. The revitalized Eastern Promenade provides universal year-round beach access, with elevated trail and a linear seat-wall for viewing. Numerous group picnic areas include accessible tables with firm, stable surfaces and adequate knee clearance.

Visitors report that the paved trails make the park navigable for wheelchair users across most of the flat areas, and that the scenery and seating along the Promenade are enjoyable for visitors of all abilities. Some visitors note that the wooded knoll and Bluff Trail areas are not accessible, and that gravel paths in parts of the park may be more challenging for those using manual wheelchairs.
