Fort Funston Beach

Overview

Fort Funston Beach is a dramatic coastal park within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA) at the southwestern tip of San Francisco, known for its 200-foot sandy bluffs, off-leash dog areas, and hang gliding. Admission and parking are both free for all visitors. The park has ADA-accessible parking spaces, including five designated van-accessible spaces with striped access aisles in the paved main parking lot. A paved, mostly level Sunset Trail begins at the northern end of the parking lot and is the most accessible portion of the trail network — it is wheelchair-accessible, typically at least 4 feet wide, and features rest areas with benches along the way. At the west end of the parking lot, a boardwalk leads to a wheelchair-accessible clifftop viewing deck overlooking the hang glider launch area and the Pacific Ocean. Restrooms (portable toilets) are located near the parking area.

Accessibility at Fort Funston is partial and terrain-dependent. The loop trails at the top of the bluffs are paved and wheelchair-accessible; however, the trails and sand ladders leading down to the beach are steep, sandy, and not accessible by wheelchair. The beach itself cannot be reached via an accessible route. Sand may blow across the paved Sunset Trail in places, though the hard surface below remains passable. Wheelchair riders will need to backtrack on the Sunset Trail loop rather than completing the full circuit, as the final section crosses sandy dunes. Accessible picnic tables are situated alongside the Sunset Trail.

Visitors note that the park is extremely popular with dog walkers and off-leash dogs are present throughout — those who are uncomfortable around dogs may wish to plan accordingly. Some visitors report that early weekday mornings offer a quieter, less crowded experience. The portable restrooms near the parking area are the only toilet facilities on site and can see heavy use on busy days.
