Overview

Stinson Beach is a 3.5-mile stretch of white sand oceanfront within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, managed by the National Park Service. Admission and parking are free for all visitors. The park has three paved lots, all with designated accessible parking spaces; the center lot is closest to the beach access pathway. Accessible restrooms with changing benches are located by the central and northernmost parking lots, featuring roll-under sinks, grab bars, lateral transfer space, and 5’x5′ turnaround clearance. A wooden boardwalk path with a large viewing deck leads over 100 feet toward the high tide line. Two loaner beach wheelchairs (all-terrain, not self-operated) are available free of charge — advance reservations are strongly recommended by calling the NPS accessibility program manager at 415-561-4958, as an access code is required for the storage locker.

A seasonal beach access mat extends from the changing rooms near the central parking lot onto the sand (typically in place Memorial Day to Labor Day, conditions permitting). Accessible roll-under picnic tables are available near the central parking lot, set on firm grass a short distance from the paved walkway. As an NPS site, service animals are permitted in accordance with federal ADA policy. Note that the path to the Siren Canteen café near the lifeguard tower is steeper than ADA-compliant grade (steeper than 1:12), though it may be manageable in a motorized wheelchair; accessible seating at the café is very limited. The bridge crossing over the creek near the entrance road has a steep lip and cracked asphalt that can be challenging for wheelchair users.

Visitors report that the beach is generally quiet and spacious, especially on weekday mornings, which may be preferable for those seeking less crowded conditions. Some visitors with mobility aids note that the sandy terrain beyond the boardwalk and access mat can be difficult to navigate independently, making advance reservation of the loaner beach wheelchair particularly worthwhile. Parking fills quickly on warm summer weekends, sometimes before noon.
