Hume Concert Hall

Overview

The Caroline H. Hume Concert Hall is the flagship performance space of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music (SFCM), housed within the Ann Getty Center for Education at 50 Oak Street in San Francisco’s Civic Center arts district. Created in a renovated historic grand ballroom, the hall seats approximately 350–450 guests and hosts orchestral concerts, opera productions, masterclasses, and recitals by students, faculty, and internationally renowned visiting artists. An elevator is present in the lobby of the building, providing step-free access to the concert hall for patrons who cannot use the grand staircase. The hall is located in the flat Civic Center neighborhood with no steep hills immediately surrounding the building, and the area features navigable curb cuts. Nearby accessible parking garages include the Performing Arts Garage at 360 Grove Street and the Civic Center Plaza Garage at 355 McAllister Street; SFCM does not operate on-site parking. The building is also a short walk from the Civic Center BART station and Van Ness MUNI stops, both of which offer accessible transit options.

The vast majority of SFCM’s public concerts — approximately 90% — are free and open to the public, with all events requiring a free ticket reservation. Some ticketed performances, such as select SFCM Orchestra concerts, carry a general admission price. All events are open to the public and tickets can be reserved via the SFCM box office online or by phone. The hall underwent significant technical upgrades completed through 2025–2026, adding a full digital proscenium with large-scale projection and enhanced lighting, which may provide increased visual engagement for audiences. No specific accessibility statement covering assistive listening devices, hearing loops, wheelchair-reserved seating designations, or other accommodation details was published on the official SFCM venue page at the time of research; visitors with specific accessibility needs are encouraged to contact the SFCM box office at 415-503-6275.

Visitors report that the hall has excellent sightlines throughout, a relaxed and casual atmosphere, and that the building features an elevator past the main lobby staircase for access to the concert hall level. Some visitors note that general amenity facilities such as refreshments are limited at the venue. The neighborhood around 50 Oak Street is described as easy to navigate by wheelchair, with flat surroundings and accessible public transit nearby.
