Lick Observatory

Lick Observatory is a historic astronomical research facility operated by the University of California, perched atop Mount Hamilton at 4,209 feet elevation. Daytime admission to the East Grounds and Shane Telescope Gallery is free for all visitors. Parking on-site is also free. The main building has wheelchair access from the back (east side ramp), though visitors should be aware that the 36-inch Great Refractor Telescope and the 3-meter Shane Telescope domes are not wheelchair accessible due to their historic construction, and those who have difficulty navigating stairs may find telescope observing inaccessible. Restrooms, a drinking fountain, and a water bottle filler are available on site during open hours.

Service animals as defined by the ADA are permitted on the grounds; however, Lick Observatory follows UC Santa Cruz policy, which clarifies that support animals are not classified as service animals and are not permitted. The observatory encourages visitors who need special assistance — including those who have difficulty climbing stairs — to contact staff in advance at [email protected] so that necessary arrangements can be made. The site is only reachable by personal vehicle, as no public transportation serves the summit.

Visitors note that parking is generally available at the top, though it can become limited during special events. The winding mountain road is a significant consideration for all visitors, especially those who may be sensitive to motion or sharp curves. Staff are described as knowledgeable and welcoming, and the observatory is noted for its stunning panoramic views of the Bay Area accessible from outdoor grounds.
