Lawrence Hall of Science

Overview

The Lawrence Hall of Science is the public science center of UC Berkeley, offering hands-on exhibits, a planetarium, 3D theater, and an Animal Discovery Zone. All exhibition spaces, public spaces, and restrooms are wheelchair accessible, with elevator access between the main floor (A level) and lower floor (C level). A limited number of loaner wheelchairs are available free of charge at the Visitor Services Desk (a photo ID deposit is required). Accessible parking is available in the Bus Circle directly in front of the plaza for visitors displaying a disabled placard or plate — ten dedicated spaces are provided. A drop-off area is located in the same area. Benches are placed throughout the building and in outdoor areas including the Plaza Fountain and the Forces that Shape the Bay science park. The main entrance on the north side has an automatic door opener.

Assistive listening devices are available during auditorium presentations including the 3D movie — visitors can request them from staff or the Visitor Services Desk. Sign language interpretation is available for in-house workshops with advance notice by calling the Registration Office at 510-642-5132 ext. 3. Sign language interpreters and other necessary attendants are admitted free of charge. The Lawrence has launched a sensory backpack lending program at the Visitor Services Desk; backpacks include hearing protection, fidget toys, and a sensory guide of the building. Guide dogs and other certified assistance animals are welcome. Free admission is available for UC Berkeley students and staff, Museums for All (EBT cardholders), and active-duty military.

Visitors report that the parking lot can be a bit of a walk to the front entrance, and some note that the building does not have air conditioning, which can affect access to certain exhibit spaces on hot days. The museum is generally noted as stroller- and wheelchair-friendly inside, with multiple floors accessible by elevator.
