Strybing Arboretum

Overview

San Francisco Botanical Garden at Strybing Arboretum is a 55-acre living museum within Golden Gate Park, showcasing more than 8,000 plant species from around the world. Most of the garden’s pathways are wheelchair accessible, and accessible routes are marked on wayfinding signage with the ISA symbol. Complimentary wheelchairs are available at either garden entrance on a first-come, first-served basis. Accessible restrooms are located near the Friend (North) Gate at Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and Tea Garden Drive; note that restrooms inside the Library building and near the Great Meadow are not accessible. Service animals are permitted throughout the gardens. Parking is available at the nearby Music Concourse Garage, and a free Golden Gate Park shuttle operates seven days a week with connections to bus lines and passenger drop zones.

The garden includes a dedicated Garden of Fragrance, created to provide sensory experiences particularly for visitors with visual impairments or other disabilities, featuring plants selected for their unique scents and interesting textures. The accessible visitor map identifies wheelchair-accessible pathways and accessible restroom locations. Reduced-rate admission is available for seniors and youth, and free admission is extended to San Francisco residents, military veterans, members, children 4 and under, and EBT/SNAP cardholders. Free admission days are open to all visitors on the second Tuesday of each month, Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day, as well as daily from 7:30–9:00 am.

Visitors report that the garden’s wide, generally flat pathways are well suited to wheelchair users and those with mobility considerations, though some areas have slight inclines that may require extra effort for manual chair users. Visitors also note that parking in the area can be limited on busy days, and suggest arriving early or using public transit or drop-off for those with mobility needs.
