Filoli Historic House and Garden

Overview

Filoli Historic House and Garden is a 654-acre National Trust for Historic Preservation estate in Woodside, California, featuring a 54,000-square-foot Georgian Revival mansion surrounded by 16 acres of English Renaissance formal gardens, a gentleman’s orchard, and miles of natural land trails. Reserved ADA parking spaces are located on the east side of the main parking lot with ADA-approved gentle grade pathways leading directly to the check-in kiosks. A loading zone and wheelchair ramp are also available adjacent to ADA parking. The Visitor Center is reachable via a stairless route from check-in, and the Quail Café is accessible by ramp from the Visitor Center lobby. ADA-compliant men’s and women’s restrooms and a drinking fountain are available in the Visitor Center. Only the first floor of the historic house is open to the public, and it is accessible for wheelchair users via a ramped entry at the south end of the house. Benches for resting are available throughout the gardens. ADA service animals are always welcome; a designated service dog relief area is located at the Olive Orchard by the main parking lot.

Many of the main garden paths are accessible, and a visitor map identifies wheelchair-accessible routes, distinguishing between paved/brick and gravel surfaces. The perimeter walkway around the northwest and southwest terraces is paved or brick; interior garden paths are narrower and some have steps. A stairless route is available via the Filoli map page. Note that wheelchairs, walkers, and other assistive devices are not available to borrow or rent at Filoli, and due to the historic structure, wheelchair users may encounter bricks, gravel, grass, and other uneven surfaces. There is no accessible route to the Estate Trail dirt loop. Filoli participates in the Museums for All program, offering free admission tickets to SNAP EBT (CalFresh) cardholders with valid matching ID.

Visitors report that the perimeter of the formal garden is largely flat with ramps connecting to raised planting areas, and that touring the first floor of the estate is manageable in both manual and power wheelchairs. Some visitors note that gravel paths can be harder to navigate in a manual wheelchair, particularly after rain, and recommend using the accessible route map before exploring. Weekday mornings are noted as a quieter time to visit for those who prefer less crowded conditions.
