The Curran is a historic 1,667-seat theater in San Francisco’s Theatre District, originally opened in 1922 and restored through a major renovation. As a historic building, wheelchair-accessible seating is limited to the Orchestra level — rows N and U — as the upper levels of the auditorium are not wheelchair accessible. A lobby lift is available for patrons with mobility issues, and fully accessible restrooms are located on the lower level of the theater. Wheelchair-accessible seats are sold at the lowest price for each performance, and a companion may purchase a ticket at the same price. Plus-sized patrons may inquire about swing-arm seats and freestanding armless seats in the accessible rows. Service animals (guide dogs only) are permitted; emotional support animals and pets are not allowed.
For deaf and hard-of-hearing patrons, infrared listening headsets are available free of charge on a first-come, first-served basis at a kiosk inside the main lobby — a valid ID is required as deposit. Select performances are scheduled as ASL-interpreted and Open Captioned; patrons should confirm dates at the time of purchase. Closed captioning and audio descriptions are also available via the GalaPro app (free download) for select productions, delivered discreetly to a patron’s personal mobile device. Patrons are encouraged to arrive early if they require accessibility assistance so staff can provide attentive support.
Visitors report that the theater’s staff are consistently friendly and helpful with access needs. Some visitors note that, as expected in a historic venue, seating can feel compact, but the orchestra level provides good sightlines and is the sole accessible level. The lobby lift is noted as the access point for patrons who cannot use stairs.
