American Conservatory Theater (A.C.T.) is a Tony Award-winning nonprofit theater company in San Francisco operating two venues: the historic Toni Rembe Theater (formerly the Geary Theater) and the Strand Theater. Both theaters provide ADA seating at every level, and modifiable seats can be removed to accommodate wheelchairs, smaller scooters, or upright chairs. Booster seats are available on each level for anyone who needs extra height. Both box offices feature dropped counters for wheelchair users. The Mason/O’Farrell Garage — a short walk from the Toni Rembe Theater — has two accessible parking spaces with elevator access on every level, and those spaces remain available even when the garage is marked full.
Assisted listening devices are available free of charge at every performance at both the Toni Rembe and Strand Theaters, including soft in-ear pods and a t-coil/induction loop option compatible with hearing aids. At least one open-captioned performance is provided for each mainstage production on both stages, with the captioning screen located house left at the Toni Rembe. Single-user and family restrooms are available at each venue. Sensory-friendly (relaxed) performances are offered in collaboration with Inclusive Arts; these include modified lighting and sound, designated movement spaces, a quiet sensory space outside the theater, sensory tools and fidgets, earplugs, and noise-reducing headphones. A Sensory Access Guide for the Toni Rembe Theater is available online. Staff are trained to assist with accessibility needs, and a Sensory Guide (access guide) is shared ahead of sensory-friendly performances. Reduced-rate tickets — including $25 tickets and $15 rush tickets available two hours before curtain — are offered under A.C.T.’s Bold Access Initiative.
Visitors report that the Strand Theater is easy to navigate and that staff are helpful with accessibility requests. Some visitors note that the historic Toni Rembe Theater has multiple levels and recommend contacting the box office in advance to confirm the best accessible seating options for individual needs.
