The UC Botanical Garden at Berkeley is a 34-acre living museum featuring over 10,000 plant species from around the world, organized into nine geographic regions. Three accessible “blue” parking spaces are available on the lowest level of the main parking lot for visitors with a disability placard or license plate. The wheelchair-accessible Campus Hill Line shuttle stops at the Garden on weekdays. All restrooms in the Garden are accessible: the upper restrooms are reached via a ramp, and the lower restrooms are accessible from the main path with push-bar entry. The main path loop is completely paved, though it includes inclines in some sections. Multiple benches and rest areas are located along the main path. Large print Garden maps are available upon request, and a 3D tactile map illustrating the Garden’s topography is located at the entrance. Service animals are permitted but must check in at the entrance kiosk upon arrival.
Due to the Garden’s naturally varied hillside topography, portions of the grounds are not accessible to all mobility devices. Paths range from wide paved surfaces to narrow gravel and dirt trails, and some areas include stairs and steep inclines exceeding 13% grade. The Garden encourages visitors to consult the online map and its terrain legend before visiting to plan the most accessible route. No wheelchairs, scooters, or other mobility devices are available to rent on site, so visitors using powered devices should arrive with a full charge. The Garden participates in the Museums for All program, offering $3 reduced admission for EBT cardholders (up to four guests), and also partners with the Discover & Go library pass program for free and discounted admission.
Visitors note that while the paved main loop is manageable, many side paths involve significant elevation changes and uneven terrain that can be challenging for wheelchair users or those with limited mobility. Some visitors report that the garden is not heavily crowded on weekday mornings, making that a more comfortable time for visitors who prefer quieter conditions.
