Oakland Zoo

Overview

Oakland Zoo is a conservation-focused zoo nestled in Knowland Park in the Oakland Hills, home to more than 850 native and exotic animals. The zoo is wheelchair accessible throughout, with an ADA Accessibility Map available to download from the official website. Wheelchairs and electric mobility scooters are available for rent at the Gift Shop near the Main Entrance, with scooter rental requiring a valid driver’s license. The zoo’s all-electric, eight-passenger gondolas — which transport guests between the lower zoo and the California Trail exhibit — are ADA-accessible and can accommodate wheelchairs and strollers. A private docent-led cart tour is also available for guests who need additional mobility support, with reservations required at least two weeks in advance ($40). Service dogs are permitted throughout the zoo, and a dedicated Service Dog Map is available indicating where service animals are allowed on grounds. Note that while some pathways are wheelchair accessible, terrain in certain areas is steep and may be challenging.

Advanced ticket reservations are required for all General Admission visits. Ticket pricing uses a plan-ahead system and varies daily, with children under age 2 admitted free and children’s tickets priced at 15% off adult rates. Seniors aged 76 and older are admitted free. Discounted admission is available for Oakland residents (via Measure Y), active-duty military and veterans, teachers, and low-income Bay Area residents through the Bay to Zoo Tickets program. The zoo participates in AZA reciprocal membership, offering 50% off for members of partner organizations including the San Francisco Zoo. Accessible parking is available on-site. Visitors arriving by transit should note there is a half-mile walk from the main gate to the zoo entrance; those requiring assistance are advised to speak with Public Safety staff at the gate.

Visitors report that trails are navigable without stairs and all exhibits have accessible viewing. Some visitors note that terrain across the zoo — particularly in the hills — can be steep for wheelchair users or those with limited mobility, and recommend planning accordingly. The covered drop-off and pick-up area near the entrance is noted as a convenient spot for those needing vehicle-side assistance before and after a visit.
