Children's Fairyland

Overview

Children’s Fairyland is America’s first storybook theme park, a whimsical 10-acre outdoor park on the shores of Lake Merritt in Oakland designed for families with children ages 0–8. The park has a dedicated accessibility page and offers a range of physical access features. A drop-off zone is located on Bellevue Avenue, and guests can follow a paved path from the white curb up to the main entrance. Reserved parking spaces are available for guests with accessibility placards. Paved walkways lead throughout most of the park. Accessible restrooms with changing tables are located at multiple points throughout the park, and a downloadable sensory map highlights sensory-engaging areas, calmer zones, and accessible restroom locations — copies are also available at the entrance. Guests who are unable to wait in ride lines due to a physical or cognitive condition can obtain a wristband at the Rainbow Desk (inside the Gift Shop) to wait in a separate queuing area and reduce wait times.

For sensory accessibility, the park loans child-friendly noise-reducing headphones from the front desk, and a Tactile Tote containing sensory toys is available to borrow for anyone feeling overwhelmed or overstimulated. A downloadable social story (PDF with photos) is available to help children with special needs prepare for their visit and know what to expect. Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays typically have lower attendance and noise levels, making them quieter options for sensitive visitors. Puppet show scripts are available upon request at the front desk for guests with hearing impairments. Fully trained service animals on a leash or harness are welcome; therapy and emotional support animals are not permitted. The park also offers a Fairyland for All program providing discounted $5 admission per person for guests with EBT, SNAP/CalFresh, BIC, or WIC cards, and Oakland residents enjoy $5 kids / $10 adult walk-up admission every Friday.

Visitors report that the paved walkways are fairly level and easy to navigate with strollers or wheelchairs, though some play areas require walking on grass or dirt. Seating and rest areas are described as plentiful throughout the park. Note that most rides are not wheelchair accessible.
