Glen Canyon Park is a free, 66.6-acre urban wilderness and recreation area managed by the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department. The park includes a recreation center with a gymnasium, auditorium, multi-purpose rooms, and a climbing wall, as well as ball fields, tennis courts, and a children’s playground. Capital improvements funded by the 2008 Clean and Safe Neighborhood Parks Bond added an accessible playground, a vehicular drop-off point at the Elk Street entrance, accessible pathways, and an accessible exterior restroom. The recreation center also lists an accessible children’s play area and accessible picnic area among its facilities. The park is free to enter for all visitors.
The recreation center hosts wheelchair basketball sessions among its regular programming. Trails in the park are labeled by difficulty level (Easy, Moderate, Challenging). The main entrance on Elk Street provides the most level access to the park’s southern recreational facilities. Some canyon trails follow relatively flat terrain near Islais Creek, while the canyon’s upper trails involve significant elevation gain on unpaved surfaces. Service animals are welcome as with all San Francisco public parks.
Visitors note that the playground area and recreation center zone near the Elk Street entrance are the most accessible parts of the park, with clean restrooms and flat paved surfaces. Those with limited mobility should be aware that many of the canyon’s hiking trails are steep and unpaved, making the natural area portions challenging for wheelchair users or those with limited mobility.
